Screen printing has been a popular method of creating custom apparel for decades. As technology advances, newer techniques like digital printing have entered the market. Two popular methods that are commonly used are Plastisol Screen Printing and Water-Based Digital Printing. In this blog post, we will discuss the differences between Plastisol screen printing and Water-Based Digital Printing, and which method is best for your business.

Plastisol Screen Printing:

Plastisol Screen Printing is a traditional screen printing technique that uses a plastic-based ink. It is the most commonly used method in the apparel industry. The ink is heated to approximately 160°C, causing it to cure. As it cools down, the ink melts and forms a thin layer of plastic that adheres well to the fabric.

The Advantages of Plastisol Screen Printing:

Vibrant Colors:
Plastisol Screen Printing inks have a high opacity level, meaning they can cover dark colored fabrics effectively. This makes it ideal for printing bright and vibrant colors.

Durability:
Plastisol Screen Printing inks create a thin layer of plastic which bonds with fabric and provides a durable print that lasts long even after multiple washes.

Cost-Effective:
Plastisol Screen Printing is cost-efficient for large volume orders. Production runs with a plastisol ink printing press are much faster, and reduces labor costs.

Water-Based Digital Printing:

Water-Based Digital Printing is a newer printing method that uses environmentally friendly water-based ink. A computer or a digital printer is used to print the design on transfer paper. The paper is then transferred to the garment using a hot press. The ink is then cured on the fabric until it is dry.

The Advantages of Water-Based Digital Printing:

Eco-Friendly:
Water-Based Digital Printing utilizes eco-friendly water-based inks, making it a sustainable choice for printing on apparel.

Soft Hand Feel:
Water-Based Digital Printing provides an ultra-soft design feel that is light on fabric. This is ideal for printing soft, comfortable apparel suitable for everyday wear.

High Quality Detail:
Water-Based Digital Printing has the ability to capture the smallest details of the design effectively, producing much cleaner and high-resolution prints.

So, Which Should You Choose?

The choice between Plastisol Screen Printing and Water-Based Digital Printing ultimately depends on the needs and preferences of the customer. While Plastisol offers great durability and vibrant colors on dark fabrics, it may not be the best option for environment-conscious individuals or for someone looking for a soft hand feel.

On the other hand, Water-Based Digital Printing provides eco-friendly and ultra-soft prints, making it an ideal choice for someone focused on sustainability and comfort.

Both Plastisol Screen Printing and Water-Based Digital Printing have their advantages and disadvantages. It is essential to understand the benefits of both printing methods and assess which printing process works best for your business. Consider your priorities carefully, and determine which method aligns with your business goals before making a printing decision.
